The Racial Justice in Early Mathematics (RJEM) Project is committed to fostering racial justice in the math teaching and learning of young children.

Established in 2029, RJEM is a cross-institutional partnership between the Early Mathematics Collaborative at Erikson Institute and the College of Education at the University of Illinois Chicago.

RJEM focuses on creating opportunities and resources for community members, educators, administrators, researchers, funders, and policy makers to:

  • Identify key issues of racial injustices in early mathematics education.
  • Engage in deep reflections on the complexities of white supremacy, antiblackness, xenophobia, and other forms of racial violence.
  • Develop responsive antiracist practices.
  • Reimagine educational systems that protect the rights of historically marginalized children to flourish in early mathematics.
